The Government's Green Deal - is 20 years too long a horizon? In a press release from DECC today, the Energy Secretary Chris Huhne gave details of the Government’s Green Deal, which aims to overhaul the energy efficiency of homes and small businesses. It is said to be able to support a quarter of a million jobs over the next 20 years and expected to be available in late 2012. It works to provide long-term finance for green measures.

The Energy Security and Green Economy Bill will be introduced in the Autumn to legislate so that long term repayment can be made through a charge on a building’s energy meter. Whilst this will encourage insulation and energy efficiency measures, the questions for the broader economy are:

Will this bill really impact the broader economy, or be limited to the insulation industry and its supply chain?

Will homes and businesses choose to finance energy efficiency improvements through their electricity bills?
