The process begins by identifying appropriate organisational boundaries and identifying what is within the scope of the footprint. Within those boundaries, real-world business activities are converted into tonnes of CO₂, using calculations approved by the UK government. Numerous checks ensure that all relevant activities are included and double-counting is avoided.

The above process is in accordance with:

• The Green House Gas Protocol – the most widely adopted international standard
• ISO 14064 and BSI PAS 2060
• Government guidelines
